This is a dog created by nature over thousands of years where the most adaptable survived. It is first in the twentieth century humans started interfering in their breeding. The basenjis lived with the pharaohs of the ancient Egypt. They were also used as highly valued hunting dogs by African tribes. Still to this day basenji like  dogs are used for hunting by African tribes even if there are not likely any pure basenjis left in Africa, perhaps in the most remote parts of the country. As early as 1895 people tried, with no success, to bring basenjis to England. 1923 they did another attempt  to bring in Congo Terriers or African Bush Dogs as they were called, but unfortunately they did not survive the inoculations. It was first in 1936 that basenjis started arriving in England where they were met with great interest

Fula of The Congo

1959

came a valuable asset to the gene pool in the form of Fula of the Congo. Veronica Tudor Williams who had kept basenjis during the years of war got Fula from the deep forest of southern Sudan

1978

a female basenji Esenjo was found and imported to the US in August the same year She was given as a gift from the Pygmies in the Ituri forest as a token of their appreciation from getting two water buffalos when they didn't have any food

Margaret Sommer, a successful breeder in California,  did a controlled breeding program where she mated Esenjo to one of her domesticated males. The male was Rameses Tut-Ankhamen and he had valuable old, old Fula lines down through the SunDiata dogs. It was a successful project that gave healthy, sound basenjis with excellent temperaments. Unfortunately there are only a few descendents to Esenjo left in the gene pool today

Esenjo

had Ebo and Efe' who were mated and got Enebo and Enefe'

who in their turn got Elija Of Esenjo

To me it seems very important to keep this valuable blood. Both my girls,  Ella and Hanna, are from Esenjo. Mary Lou Kenworthy, Kenset Basenjis, USA, who I respect greatly, helped me pick a male with Esenjo blood to use in my breeding. The result is Suddanly Swede playing Karimba "Petter". Petter's father is Mary Lou's own Marty and mother is
